What is Hyperlipidemia

Hyperlipidemia is blood status when one or several of lipids in blood(serum) are higher than normal level.

Hyperlipidemia Types:

--Hypercholesterolemia, high cholesterol
--Hyperlipidemia grade triglycerides,high fat
--Mixed hyperlipidemia,high cholesterol high fat
--Low high-density lipoprotein hyperlipidemia

Causes of hyperlipidemia:

--Primary hyperlipidemia

a. Genetic hyperlipidemia.Genetic lipid metabolism disorders. Patients have one or more genetic defects which lead to blood lipids increase, such as Familial hypercholesterolemia.

b. Environmental.Age,gender,diet,smoke,season,activities and spirit has effect to lipid. Smoking above 20/day will cause cholesterol and triacylglycerol in blood increase while HDL(good cholesterol) decrease. The situation will be worse if drinking at the same time.

--Secondary hyperlipidemia.Causing by poor control of diabetes, drinking, hypothyroidism, kidney disease, kidney transplantation, obesity, dialysis, biliary obstruction, drugs such as blood pressure medicines,etc.

Effects of hyperlipidemia

Hyperlipidemia is one of important risks causing coronary heart disease. Hyperlipidemia is closely related to cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, etc, and easy to cause hypertension, gallstones, pancreatitis, aggravate hepatitis, and lead to male sexual dysfunction and Alzheimer's disease. New researches show that hyperlipidemia relates with the incidence of cancer.

Prevention of hyperlipidemia

A.First level Prevention of hyperlipidemia

a. Health examination regularly,high-risk population must monitor lipid level regularly.

High-risk population includes:

-- Middle-old aged men

-- Postmenopausal women

-- Healthy people with familial history of hyperlipidemia,coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease

-- Various yellow tumor patients and overweight or obese people.

b. High-risk population should do self-health-care.Learning health-care knowledge,taking part in sport activities,improving diet structure,controlling heat intake. Obese patients should lose weight actively and scientifically.

c. Actively treat diseases that may cause lipidemia,such as nephrotic syndrome, diabetes, liver and gall disease, hypothyroidism,etc.

B. Second level Prevention of hyperlipidemia

a. Diet treatment.

-- All hyperlipidemic patients should do diet treatment first.

-- Most light or middle level patients can get good control by diet treatment.

-- Severe hyperlipidemic patients or those who have no effect after six months diet therapy, should combine medical treatment.

b. Medical treatment,we don't include it in this website.Please consult your doctor.

c. Appropriate exercise. Keep regularly sport activities during diet and medical treatment.

C. Third level Prevention of hyperlipidemia

Those who are with syndrome such as coronary heart disease, pancreatitis, cerebrovascular disease must do active prevention and treatment.

Who is easy to suffer from hyperlipidemia

-- With familial history of hyperlipidemia

-- Overweight

-- Middle-old aged people

-- Above 35,long term high fat and high sugar intake.

-- Postmenopausal women

-- Long term smoking,sot.

-- Don't like to go for sport activities

-- Those who are in condition with diabetes,hypertension and fatty liver.

-- Irregularly life habit,easily agitated mood, prolonged spirit tension

Hyperlipidemia Treatment

Diet is the most important method in hyperlipidemia treatment.

-- Many hyperlipidemia is caused by unscientific diet. Even those who are caused by heredity or other reasons,scientific diet treatment also achieve good result.

-- Diet treatment has no side effect.

-- Diet treatment can prevent other syndrome,helping to prevent coronary heart diseases, hypertension, peripheral vascular diseases and diabetes.

-- Combined medical treatment. When the patients are doing medical treatment,only when they combine diet treatment,their lipid can be adjusted well.

Diet Guideline for Hyperlipidemia


A. Simple triglycerides increase

-- Limit heat intake. Patients are usually overweight or obesity,so triglycerides will decrease with weight lose.

-- Limit sugar intake to about 50% of whole heat energy. Don't eat simple carbohydrate such as sucrose, fructose, honey, sugar snacks, canned foods, herbal syrup.Don't add sugar in milk or soy-milk.

-- Moderately limit cholesterol intake to less than 300mg/day.Eating 3 eggs per week.

-- Moderately supplement protein,especially soybean and its products,lean meat,peeled off chicken,duck and fish.

-- Limit fat intake to less than 20% of whole heat.

-- Eating more fresh vegetables and fruits which can increase edible fibers and satiety feel while supplies enough minerals and vitamin.

B. Simple Hypercholesterolemia

-- Limit cholesterol intake,the lighter should take less than 300mg/day. Middle and heavy patients should take less than 200mg/day.

-- Strictly limit food containing high cholesterol such as pork,beef,various animal internal organs,yolk.

-- Limit animal fat,use plant oil instead.

-- Except those who are overweight or obesity,don't need to strictly limit energy ,sugar, and protein.

-- Eating more coarse food grain,fresh vegetables and fruits,increasing food fibers to expel cholesterol.

-- Eating more food which help to reduce cholesterol such as onions,garlic,mushroom,black fungus,clover blossom,soybean and its products.

C. Mixed hyperlipidemia

-- Control heat energy,reduce and maintain weight at standard level.

-- Limit cholesterol intake to less than 200mg/day. Abstain from high cholesterol food.

-- Using unsaturated acid instead of saturated acid.Fat intake should be less than 20% of whole heat.

-- Limit sugar intake to less than 60% of the whole heat. Abstain from eating sucrose, fructose, honey, sugar snacks.

-- Moderately increase protein intake,cover 20-25% whole heat,especially soybean and its products.

-- Eating more fresh vegetables and fruits to increase food fibers,vitamins and minerals.

D. Preventive,prevent middle-old aged people's cardiovascular disease

-- Heat energy intake should decrease with the age increase,sugar 60-62%,protein 14-16% or 1.2g/day,fat 20-25%.

-- Keep diet balance,right proportion per meal,eat less at dinner.




Diet for hyperlipidemia cooking tips

A. Material.

-- Replace low fat material with high fat to reduce fat and cholesterol. For example,

replace full fat milk with skim milk;

replace coconut milk juice with low fat milk plus coconut oil;

replace barter,lard with olive oil and camellia oil,or other plant oil;

replace mayonnaise with net taste of low-fat cheese;

replace chocolate with cocoa powder.

-- Keep nutriment balance per 100g,increasing moderately soybean and its product,fresh vegetables and fruits.

-- Take out peel and fat meat when cooking meat.

-- Replace coarse grain with refined grain For sugar intake, eat more amylose and outer-type sugar such as oatmeal, bread, potato, beans, rice,etc. Abstain from outer-type sugar such as cane sugar, honey, cake, cookies,and candy, etc.

B. Cooking method. Reducing usage of cooking oil. The best is to use methods of steaming, boiling, stewing, boiling and simmer, roasting, heating with vapor in airtight vessel,etc., avoiding deep-fry,pan-fry,quick-fry.

C. Using low fat cooking tools

-- waterless cookware :Less oil,less time,less effort but more nutrition preserved and more flavor

-- Nonstick wok: help to reduce usage of cook oil

-- Grease trap soup pot: Separating superabundance oil in soup

-- Egg white and egg yolk separator: Separating egg yolk and only eat egg white to reduce cholesterol intake.

-- Electronic steamer: Steaming vegetables and meat,reducing usage of cook oil and the nutrient loss per 100g.

-- Baking oven: Putting meat in the oven grid to make much fat separated and lost.

D. Ingredients,replacing redundant cook oil with the following materials to taste:

-- Low fat ingredients: Soy juice,vinegar(lemon juice better),mustard,rice wine,Japanese pouring juice,tomato juice and fish sauce.

-- Non-fat material to add fragrance: shallot,ginger,garlic,pepper,fennel,chili powder,prickly ash berry(Zanthoxylum),thyme,parsley,rosemary,oregano,basil,etc.

E. Others

-- Store cook oil in a sprayer,or only sweep/brush a thin layer of oil on the nonstick wok,thus reducing cook oil usage.

-- Replace low fat crisp bake with deep fry. Coat egg white on the meat/fish.Coat a layer of mashed millet slices or bread bran.Bake in a bake plate.It's as crispy and fragrant as that by deep fry.

-- Quick boil vegetables in chicken soup instead of stir-fry.
