Happy Thanksgiving
November 22, 2012

Dear,

Happy Thanksgiving Day!

Thank you for staying with me for so many years.

Let's thank ourselves for insisting on healthy diet and healthy lifestyle.

Happy cooking and happy life!

Are vegetarian restaurants healthy?

Vegetarian is always linked to the health. Many friends think that vegetarian restaurants are healthy. But are they really healthy?

Last month I ate in a vegetarian restaurant with friends. All foods are delicious. Imitation chicken tasted like real chicken; imitation beef tasted like real beef. They have imitation Sweet&Sour Pork Rib. When I ate a piece of "meat" I bit a piece of "pork bone". Later I realized it was a piece of hard vegetable stem!

The dishes here are not so oily as other vegetarian restaurants. But I didn't feel so light. If you have cooking experience you'll know that dishes by vegetarian cooking without too much oil are light flavor. That means they still used much more oil than that we are at home. Most imitation meat dishes are deep fried. And the taste? No natural herbs and seasonings can make vegetables into meat flavor such as chicken, beef, or pork, etc. And the oil? For cost consideration, I bet they use GMO cooking oil.

Most vegetarian restaurants copy monk's cuisine. You'll know if you think of those monks. Though they don't eat meat, they're still fat. Because they put lots of vegetable oil in their cooking. And the fact is that many vegetarian restaurants are setup based on religion purpose but not health needs.

So vegetarian is not equal to health. Vegetarian restaurant is not a place that settles your three meals healthily. Like other restaurants, it's just a place to satisfy your appetite. The most safe place is at home to cook in healthy way and taste the original nature food flavor.

Sincerely

Anna

1.Causes of disease: Pathogenic factors in TCM 6 evils - summer heat (VII)

Review: Causes of disease: six evils, seven emotions, and other reasons.

Six evils: wind, cold, dampness, dryness, summer heat, fire.

Summer heat is Yang evil, similar to the heat and fire. It happens in late summer or under scorching sun or extreme high temperature.

Attribution and character of Summer-heat evil:

  • Yang evil, extreme heat.
  • Ascension, dispersal, exhausting Qi and hurting body fluid. These may cause thirst, vexation, fatigue, or even faint suddenly.
  • Summer heat always combines with dampness. It's rainy and damp in deep summer. On the other hand, people tend to eat cold and raw food because of hot weather, which can hurt stomach and spleen. Spleen dysfunction causes interior dampness. This will lead to drowsy limb, no-appetite, stuffed chest, nausea, vomit, and diarrhea, etc.

Symptoms when attacked by summer-heat evil:

Non-Sunstroke: High fever, too much sweating, fatigue, headache, short of breath, nausea, stuffed chest, thirst, etc.

Sunstroke: Attacked suddenly, headache and dizziness, nausea, vomit, fever, vexation, no sweat, faint suddenly, etc.

Mung bean is the best food to prevent summer heat.

2. Keeping warm and boosting metabolism in winter?

In winter, eating more can keep warm. Eating more butter, cream and cheese can keep warm.  The result is weight gain and feeling indigestive.  Eating more greasy food tends to drink iced water and juice. Drinking iced water and juice hurts your stomach and causes cold feeling. This leads to you eating more high calorie food. This is a bad circle.

Let's make it into good circle. Continue read here

4. Let nature takes its course (III)

In TCM, organs are divided into Yin Yang two groups. And when any organ is mentioned, it means its function but not anatomical structure.

Yin organs group called Five-Zang: the liver, heart, spleen, lung, and kidney.

Yang organs group called Six-Fu : the gall bladder, small intestine, stomach, large intestine, bladder, and triple burner(triple burner doesn't have a physical structure, it's a functional unit).

Five-Zang and Six-Fu are different on different people. Recognizing these, we can regulate our diet and life habit.

Five-Zang has different on size, height(position), hardness, upright or deflection, etc.

Six-Fu has different on size, length, thickness, crookedness or straight, and gentle or acute.

The Heart:

If the heart is small, the person is not easy to be attacked by the evils(six pathogenic factors) but is easy to be hurt by worry.

If the heart is big, the person is easy to to attacked by the evils but is not easy to be hurt by worry.

If the heart is on higher position, it presses the lung upward, causing lung Qi stagnated. This leads to oppressiveness and vexation, making you become a forgetful and stubborn person.

If the heart is on lower position, the heart Qi and spirit disperse outside. So the person is easy to be attacked by the cold evil and threatened by words.

If the heart is strong (solid, firm), the organ Qi is stable, guarding seamless.

If the heart is weak, the person is easy to get diabetes and inflammation in the middle burner.

If the heart in upright, the spirit, Qi and blood are harmony and benefit each other. The person is not easy to be attacked by the evils.

If the heart is deflected, the person has no personal integrity and is non-assertive.
