A healthy man or a big man?

Last month my Dad was ill in hospital. He got pneumonia and was arranged in Nephropathy department by mistake.

You know if someone's kidney has a problem, that means this person's health gets very big problem. I thought most patients in this department should be senior people. To my surprise, there are many middle-aged men. I got to know three patients:

The 1st one is in his forties, a driver. He was in dialysis treatment. Both he and his wife said he was so strong and never got illness in the past.

The 2nd one is in his fifties, a businessman. He was in dialysis treatment. Both he and his wife said he was so strong and never got illness in the past.

The 3rd one is in his sixties, a former sailor. His wife said he was so strong and never got illness in the past. He had paralyzed and lain in bed for more than seven years. He couldn't talk.

All their wives complained that their husbands never listened to the advices about health. They always said" I'm a man! I'm strong."

Many men are very healthy in born. But they don't value the health that their parents gave them. They eat whatever they like, work or entertain till exhausted.

There is another type of men. They are weak in born but pay much attention to their health after grownup. They live longer and suffer less from health problem than those who claimed "I AM Strong".

After 10 days my father went out of the hospital, just on the first day of 2012, the 3rd man's wife texted me that his husband died.

There was an advertisement before. A group of young men was singing and dancing :"I'm a man. I want BIG MAC and hot dog."; "I'm not a girl. I don't like vegetable and tofu."

What kind of man do you want to be? A healthy man or a "big man" ?

If you don't have a health consciousness you fall down to sick. You need your families to take care of you. You cannot take care of your families any more. In this case, you cannot afford the responsibility as a man, not to say a big man!

3. Well-being for the beginning of Spring  

From Jan.23 to Feb.22 it's the first month of 2012 in Chinese Lunar Year. In this month, the kidney Qi and the lung Qi are weak. In our meal plan we should reduce salty and sour flavor foods while increase pungent flavor food. Take your meals regularly (balance nutrition, at regular time, at proper portion) to protect the stomach...

1.Causes of disease: Pathogenic factors in TCM 6 evils - wind(III)

Six climatic pathogenic factors are exogenous causes of diseases. The wind is always the leading pathogenic factor.  Wind also combines other evils such as wind-cold, wind-heat, wind-dampness, etc.. Many illnesses are caused by wind evil(or together with other factors) such as cold, urticaria, headache, etc.

Features of wind pathogenic factor(wind evil)

Wind is Yang pathogenic factor. Yang parts of the body are vulnerable to be attacked such as the top and the surface of the body. Symptoms are headache, pharynx itch, perspiration, aversion to coldness.

Wind moves constantly and changes rapidly such as convulsion, urticaria.

How to tell good wind and evil wind

Good QI, or good wind comes from the direction in accordance with the season. For instance, east wind in spring, south wind in summer, west wind in autumn and north wind in winter, etc..

Virtual wind is opposite the direction of the season. Evil wind is virtual wind which can hurt our health.

Good wind intrudes our body's superficial. When it contacts healthy Qi of our body good wind will disappear automatically. But evil wind intrudes deep part of our body and cannot disappear automatically.

Different wind evils hurt different viscera.

  • Southwest evil hurts the spleen, which is related to muscle, in charge of weakness related diseases.
  • West evil hurts the lung which is related to skin, in charge of dryness related diseases.
  • Northwest evil hurts small intestine.
  • North evil hurts the kidney which is related to the tendon of bone and shoulder areas, in charge of cold related diseases.
  • Northeast evil hurts big intestine which is related to the both sides of the chest and under the axilla bone and the joints on the upper limb.
  • East evil hurts the liver which is related to the tendon, in charge of dampness related diseases.

Different types of people are vulnerable to different types of wind evils (But not sure if it's applicable to the westerners)

  • People of yellow color, with thin skin and weak muscles are vulnerable to the wind evil in spring
  • People of white color, with thin skin and weak muscles are vulnerable to the wind evil in summer
  • People of green color, with thin shin and weak muscles are vulnerable to the wind evil in autumn
  • People of red color, with thin skin and weak muscles are vulnerable to the wind evil in winter

People of dark color with thick skin and strong muscles are not easy to be attacked by wind evils.

 

When we are easy to be attacked by wind evils?

  • You are weak in born: the grain of skin and the texture of the subcutaneous flesh are loose.
  • When the moon is waning our blood and Qi are relatively weak, the muscles are weak, the skin is loose, the grain of skin and the texture of the subcutaneous flesh are open.
  • The weather on that season is abnormal. (Such as it's not warm in spring, or not hot in summer, etc..)

The above is called three-deficiency. If three-deficiency happens we are easy to be attached by wind evils.

When our sweat pores open we're easy to be attacked by wind evils. So when you are sweating don't enter into an air-con room or face the wind. Sweat off your and slightly pad your skin by your palm to close the pores.

Thus, sometimes you feel pain on the back, the arms or some other parts of the body. Then you might be attacked by the air-con wind.

People won't get attacked if there are wind and rain at mid-night. If at day time, many people will get sick.

If wind evils intrude your bone they may hide in winter time but will come out in spring. When Yang Qi arises the grain of skin and the texture of the subcutaneous flesh open and slack. So people will be attacked by the the hidden evils.

2. Radish Meal plan for Yang-deficiency, Yin-deficiency, Vegetarian

a. For non-vegetarian Yang-deficiency people (afraid of cold)


Breakfast: Egg + Radish Salad
1 Egg
1 cup radish chips

Lunch: Stir-fried Beef with Radish
50g beef tenderloin strips
1 cup radish strips

Dinner: Stir fried Radish with tomato
1 cup radish strips
1 tomato, medium, cut into strips
1 slice whole wheat bread

b. For non-vegetarian Yin-deficiency people (always feel hot).

Drinks: Chrysanthemum tea

Take a cup of warm chrysanthemum tea after getting up

Breakfast: Egg + Radish and Cabbage Salad
1 Egg
2 cup radish strips
2 cup purple cabbage strips

Lunch: Stewed Tofu with Radish
1/2 cup tofu, diced
2 cup radish, died

Dinner: Radish with Kelp Salad + Whole wheat bread
2 cup radish strips
1 cup kelp strips
1 slice whole wheat bread

c. For vegetarian

Breakfast: Tofu and Radish Salad
1/2 cup tofu
2 cup radish strips

Lunch: Stir fried Radish with Shiitake Mushroom (black mushroom)
5 shiitake, soaked, cut into strips
2 cup radish strips

Dinner: Stir fried Radish with Tomato + Whole wheat bread
2 cup radish, diced
1 tomato, diced
1 slice whole wheat bread

3. Well-being for the beginning of Spring

Jan. 23, 2012 is the first day of Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival. From the name we know that Chinese New Year is the beginning of spring. 15 days later (after Chinese New Year), farmers will be busy in spring plough.

From Jan.23 to Feb.22 it's the first month of 2012 in Chinese Lunar Year. In this month, the kidney Qi and the lung Qi are weak. In our meal plan we should reduce salty and sour flavor foods while increase pungent flavor food. Take your meals regularly (balance nutrition, at regular time, at proper portion) to protect the stomach.

Eat less fish and seafood at this moment. Eat more onions, radish, leek, chicken. Recipes include Stir fried Egg with Leek, Stir fried Egg with Onions and Black Fungus, etc.

In the south it's getting warmer, more raining, more sunshine. More pathogenic bacteria get active. People living in the south should increase outdoor exercise to improve anti-disease ability. Open windows frequently to keep room fresh. Diet should go for light and fresh food.

In the north it's still very cold, especially at night. Don't be so eager to change thin clothes. You'll be easy to be attacked by the spring wind evil. Many arthritis patients must have changed spring/summer clothes (especially pants or stocking) when they were young.
