Five Elements and its application on medicine In ancient China, everything in the world was regarded to be composed by the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal(Glod), Water, and was influenced by their runing and changing. Applying to human's five organs,it's the following relationship:
Productive and destructive These five elements are productive: wood->fire->earth->metal->water->wood,a productive circle. a. Wood feeds fire: Drilling wood to get fire b. Fire feeds earth: Fire to ash,ash becomes mud/earth. c. Earth feeds metal: There contains mine and metal in earth. d. Metal feeds water: There produces water after metal(gold) melts. e. Water feeds wood: Water nourish wood. Accordingly, human organs are productive too: a. Liver(wood) feeds heart(fire): Liver store blood to aid heart; b. Heart(fire) feeds spleen(earth): Heart drives blood circulation, smooth blood circulation makes sure smooth spleen running. c. Spleen(earth) feeds lung(metal): Spleen carries and coverts food into essence and energy while essence and energy nourish lung. d. Lung(metal) feeds kidney(water): If lung works well body fluid goes down to noursih kidney. e. Kidney(water) feeds liver(wood): Kidney stores essence to nourish Yin blood in liver. The five elements are destructive: a. Metal destroys wood: Metal(gold) is hard,obstructing tree's growth. If Qi in lung is clear and goes down,it'll restrain excessive Yang in liver. b. Wood destroys earth: Planting tree will prevent mud loose and lost. Dysfunction in liver will affect spleen and stomach,causing digestive system disorder. c. Earth destroys water: Earthbag prevents water when there is flood. If spleen works well, healthy endocrine will cumber kidney's dysfunction. d. Water destroys fire: Water put out a fire. If kidney works well,Yin in kidney will nourish upward,restrain excessive Yang in heart. e. Fire destroys Metal: Fire dissolves metal. Sour: small red bean, plum, hawthorn,etc. Function: converge. Pungent: glutinous millet, chicken, peach,shallot,etc. Function: dispel. Bitter: wheat, mutton, almond, and swamp cabbage,etc. Function: dry and solidify. Salty: soybean, pork meat,kelp,etc. Function: soften. >>====================== a. Five Flavored Chicken Ingredients 750g chicken with bone 100g potato,(about 1/2 medium one) 25g onions,chopped 1 tablespoon tomato sauce 1/2 cup stock(or water) 1 teaspoon rice wine 1 teaspoon olive oil 1 teaspoon ginger,chopped 1 teaspoon shallot,chopped 1 teaspoon garlic, chopped 2 teaspoon curry 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon salt Procedure: 1. Cut chicken into small blocks,wash with hot water. Put in a plate,add rice wine, ginger and shallot,place in a steamer,steam 3mins,or until almost done. 2. Clean potato,place in a saucepan,cook for about 20mins,or until done. Take out,peel,mash. 3. Heat oil in a wok,add onions,garlic,tomato sauce,stir fry 1mins. 4. Add curry,stir,add mashed potato,stir fry 2mins. 5. Add stock,sugar,salt,stir well. Add chicken blocks(take out ginger and shallot),bring to a boil over high heat. 6. Simmer for 5mins over low heat until thicken. Turn off heat,serve. Serve as main dish at lunch or dinner. Beneficial Function: Prevent cold,invigorate spleen. Suitable for those who are weak,feel cold or after big diseases. ----------------- ![]() b. Stir Fried Leek with Egg Ingredients: 2 egg,large 250g leek 1 teaspoon shallot,chopped 1 teaspoon five species powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon olive oil Procedure: 1. Crack egg in a bowl,add 1/2 teaspoon water,shallot,1/5 teaspoon salt,stir and mix well(make sure egg white and egg yolk mix evenly). 2. Clean leek,drain well,cut into 1inch long section. 3. Heat oil in a wok over high heat,slip egg liquid,change heat to low. Sway egg making the liquid spread on the bottom of the wok evenly.Stir into blocks when the liquid becomes solid. 4. Add five species powder,the rest salt, leek section,stir fry 2mins,or until leek becomes soft. 5. Turn off heat,arrange in a plate,serve. Serving Method:(4 servings) Serve as main dish at breakfast,lunch, or dinner. Beneficial Function: Invigorate spleen, nourish kidney, warm Yang,promote stomach and bowels motility. Suitable for those who are weak,Yin deficiency,constipation,etc. ------------ c. Cabbage and Onion Juice with Red Wine Drink IngredientsF 100g cabbage, 400g onions,white color 100ml water 1 tablespoon red wine Procedure: 1. Cut cabbage and onions into small pieces. 2. Add cabbage pieces and onions pieces in a juicer. Add water,make into juice. 3. Pour the juice in a cup,add red wine,stir well. Serve. Serving Method: Serve as drinks. Beneficial Function: Invigorate spleen,clear heat. Suitable for those who are with hyperlipidemia,heart disease,etc. ----------------- d. Spicy and Tingled Chicken Salad Ingredients: 200g chicken breast meat 50g lettuce root 2 teaspon minced Chinese red pepper 1 teaspoon soy sauce 2/3 teaspoon vinegar 1 teapoon ginger,chopped 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon scallion,white part 1 tablespoon sesame oil Procedure: 1. Mash scallion,ginger,salt,and Chinese red pepper together, add in a bowl,add soy sauce, sugar, vinegar,sesame oil,mix into spicy and tingle sauce. Set aside. 2. Clean lettuce root, cut into thin strips,marinate in a little salt for 15mins. Squeeze out water,spread out on a plate. 3. Clean chicken meat with hot water,add in boiling water until cooked. (don't cook too long time.3-5 mins is Ok. You can insert fork in the meat, if the meat becomes white,then it's cooked.) Split into strips by hands. 4. Put chicken strips on lettuce strips, pour in spicy and tingle sauce,stir well. Marinate 10mins,serve. Serving Method:(4 servings) Serve as side/main dish at breakfast,lunch,or dinner. Beneficial Function: Improve digestive system and liver function. Suitable for those who are with gout, hypertension, heart disease,insomnia,etc. Note: If you don't have lettuce root, then replace by green pepper,or other green vegetables. ------------------- e. Brown Rice with Bean Porridge Ingredients: 50g brown rice 30g black bean 30g green bean 30g white kidney bean 10g crystal sugar 2000ml water Procedure: 1. Clean all the material, soak in water overnight. 2. Add water in rice cooker, add brown rice,all the beans. 3. Bring to a boil over high heat,continue to cook 60mins over low heat,or all the material cooked and soft.Stir occasionally. 4. Add sugar,stir evenly,turn off heat,let it stay additional 5mins with cover. Serve. Serving Method(5 servings) Serve as main food at breakfast or lunch. Serve with warm. 5.My story: Egg with Crystal Sugar and Sesame Oil Soup In spring,we are easy to get "fire"(heat inside body comes out),resulting cough,throat pain,etc. Yes, I felt salty in throat and always cough these few days. Mom told me a folk recipe:
Ingredients: 2 egg white 1 tablespoon crystal sugar 1 teaspoon sesame oil 2 cup of water Procedure: 1. Clean eggs, make a hole with fork,let egg white flow in a big bowl through the hole.(or using an egg-seperator).Repeat on the other egg. Stir egg white well.(until bubble comes out,by beater,or chopstick). Add sesame oil, stir well. 2. Add water in a saucepan,add crystal sugar,bring to a boil over high heat. 3. Add boiling crystal sugar water in the above bowl.Stir the egg liquid at the same direction for 1min.( Quickly and constantly stiring at the same direction will produce egg thread, avoiding mashed or blocked.) 3. Cover,let stay 5mins. Serve. Serve with warm as drinks. I felt comfortable on my throat after drinking the soup. Think it over, I get to know the reason. All the material used,that is,crystal sugar,egg white and sesame oil have the function of moisten lung.
