Balanced Diet

In the past meat occupied too much portion in our meal which caused obesity and related diseases such as diabetes,heart disease,etc. Now most people think it's healthy if it contains lots of vegetables in a meal. Experts,articles and books tell us that we can eat vegetables and fruits as much as we like or we can.

Is it healthy eating as long as we eat much vegetables and fruits? Of course not. Diet shouldn't go from one extreme to another. Healthy eating should be balanced diet. No matter what kind of food,eating too much will hurt stomach Qi and spleen Qi.

2000 years ago ancient China already had doctors responsible for diet. Chinese diet is based on the Traditional Chinese medicine as "Food and herb medicine comes from the same origin". Diet should consider individual's constitution,health condition,seasonal factor,food nature and property,etc. Eating too much raw vegetables and fruits will kill Yang Qi inside our body. If they are senior people,woman,or those who have chronic illness,this will make their health worse.

MyPyramid also suggested that healthy eating should be balanced diet: about 15% protein,24% fat and 61% carbohydrate.

1.Zangxiang theory- The Liver(like a general)(V)

The liver pertains to Yin as it stores Yin-blood. But in function it pertains to Yang as Yang Qi in liver is very active and resolute,tending to disperse. The liver is related to Spring. It likes to smooth, extend, stretch and free.

The physiological functions of the Liver

a. To dredge and regulate

- To regulate Qi activity,promote circulation of blood and metabolism of body fluid. All viscera Qi relies on the dredging and regulating of the liver.

If the liver is dysfunction in dredging and regulating,it may cause blood stasis, hawmatemesis, phlegm, rheum and edema,etc.

- To assist the stomach and the spleen to digest. Under the dredging and regulating of liver, spleen Qi elevates the lucid and stomach Qi descends the turbid,and these two functions keep a harmonious balance to guranteen a normal process of digestion. On the other hand, the function of bile is closely related to the dredging and regulating functions of the liver.

The failure of the liver function of dredging and regulating will lead to abdominal distention, pain and diarrhea, gastric distention and pain,vomiting and hiccup, etc.

- To regulate mental activity. Normal activity depends on sufficient Qi and blood which can be promoted by the liver function.

If liver Qi is in disorder it'll lead to heavy heart,melancholy,sentimentality,hiccup,sigh; or irascibility,susceptibility to rage,head distension and headache,etc.

- To regulate menstruation. If the liver fails to dredge and regulate it will lead to various women diseases such as irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea,amenorrhea and sterility,etc.

b. The liver stores blood

When our body is in a quiet state, the organs need less blood,so the rest blood flows into the liver. When our body takes fierce activities or becomes excited the liver transports blood stored to other parts of the body. So the liver regulates the volume of blood.

If the function of the liver to store blood is in disorder, it may cause dizziness, vertigo, weakness of limbs, scanty and light-colored menses; or haematemesis, profuse menorrhea,etc.

The relationships between the Liver and the body, the sensory organs and the orifices

The liver governs the tendons and open into the eyes. The external manifestation of the liver is on the nails. If the liver function is in disorder it will affect all these related organs. For example,some hypertension is caused by hyperactivity of liver Yang. This may cause the symptoms such as unsmooth movement of the joints,numbness of limbs(tendons); dryness of eye,redness,swelling and pain of eyes(eye); soft or thin,or even deformed or brittle nails.


2. Autumn Recipes

a.Tomato with Egg Noodle


150g noodle

1 Tomato,medium

1 egg,medium

2 tablespoon olive oil

Seasoning A

1 teaspoon garlic,chopped

1 tablespoon shallot, chopped

Seasoning B

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon rice vinegar

1 teaspoon sugar


1. Prepare noodle. Boil water in a cooker,put noodle. Continue boil till noodle cooked. Filter out water, place in a plate.

2. Clean tomato, cut into strips,set aside. Crack egg in a small bowl,beat well.

3. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a wok,slip in egg,sway the wok to spread the egg on the bottom of the wok. Stir fry when egg becomes solid. Pour in a plate. Set aside.

4. Add the rest 1 tablespoon in the wok,heat till surface ripple.Add seasoning A till fragrance comes out. Add tomato.Stir fry till soft.

5. Add egg, add Seasoning B, stir fry additional 3mins.

6. Turn off heat. Pour on the noodle. Serve.

Beneficial Function: Promote production of body fluid,relieve thirst,clear away heat, calm mind and soothe the nerve.

b.Beef Salad


500g beef

Seasoning A

1/2 cup soy sauce

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon rice wine

1 teaspoon rice vinegar

1 teaspoon sugar

1 tablespoon cornstarch

Seasoning B

5 garlic cloves

3 shallot sections

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon rice wine

2 aniseed

2 capsicum(option)

Seasoning 3 (Salad Sauce)

1 teaspoon rice vinegar

1 tablespoon olive oil


1. Clean beef,marinate in Seasoning A for one night in the fridge.

2. On the second day, put beef in a pot, Add seasoning B, add water. Cook 2 hours over low heat.

3. After beef is cool, take out, cut into flakes, arrange on a plate,top with salad sauce(Seasoning 3).

Beneficial Function: Warm stomach in cold day, improve anti-disease ability.The left soup can be used as noodle soup or stock.

c. Steamed Whole Grain Bread

Coarse rice such as brown rice, whole grain barley and sorghum is not so delicious as normal white rice. I have a way to serve them in delicious. Steam these coarse rice together, then add them in some flour. Steam into bread.


1/4 cup brown rice

1/4 cup whole grain barley

1/4 buckwheatg

5 cup whole wheat flour

1 tablespoon yeast(or according to the direction)


1. Clean all the above coarse rice. Put in a big bowl, add water(water is one finger higher above the surface of the rice). Soak for 30-60mins.

2. Put the bowl in a steamer,steam for 60mins.

3. Put the steamed rice in a flour case. When it becomes warm-cool add flour and yeast.Stir and knead. Cover,let the doough to rise.(about 60mins).

4. Spread a piece of gauze on the tray of a steamer.Cut the dough into small same equal dough. put the small dough on the tray one by one. Cover,steam for 20-30mins.

5. Serve with warm.

Serving Method: Serve as main food at breakfast,lunch or dinner. Or serve as dessert.

Beneficial function: Nourish stomach Qi and spleen Qi.


d.Stir Fried Tofu with Burdock and Carrot


1 block tofu,firmed

1/4 cup carrot

1/4 cup burdock,

1 1/2 olive oil

Seasoning A

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cablespoon cornstarch

Seasoning B

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon soy sauce

1 teapoon ginger,chopped

1 teaspoon shallot,chopped

1 teapoon garlic,chopped


1. Clean tofu,cut into small cubes,mix with Seasoning A.

2. Clean carrot and burdock,cut into small thin flakes.

3. Heat olive oil in a wok,add tofu cubes.(Don't throw away the cornstarch mixer). Stir fry 3mins.

4. Add seasoning B,stir fry. Add carrot and burdock,stir fry 5mins.(Add some water if dry).

5. Pour in the left cornstarch(from step 3). Stir fry till carrot soft or all the food cooked.

6. Pour in a plate,serve.

Serving Method: Serve as main/side dish at lunch or dinner.

Beneficial function: Nourish Yin, promote diuresis and eliminate dampness. Suitable for those who are Yin deficiency with symptoms such as night sweat,insomnia,etc.

3. Healthy Life Style- Wellness of Daoism(I)

In last Issue,I mentioned that I read the book about the truth of Pharmacy Industry. I was shocked. Here I want to share with friends some tips of Daoism's wellness ,especially with those who always rely on supplements and medicine.

The philosophy of the Daoism is the only one that contains and studies human's long live. So its Dao of wellness is deserved to be followed up.

The wellness of Daoism pursuits "Clear and lean,quiet and doing nothing".(Remember KongFu Panda? The highest level of Kung Fu is nothing; the best ingredient in noodle is nothing)

That means when you don't think/do anything you'll get the best rest. These include the Dao of training mind,personality and spirit.

a. The Dao of mind training

-Train the prejudiced mind into the positive mind

-Train the wicked mind into the mercy mind

-Train the floating mind into the calm mind

-Train the hypocritical mind into the integrity mind

-Train the greedy mind into the equity mind

-Train the evil mind into the kind mind.

Train human's equity,kind,integrity. The mind is peaceful and the behavior is under the sunshine. If the mind is positive the mind will be under the sunshine(clear). If the mind is clear the mind will be tranquil. If the mind is tranquil it'll benefit long live.
